If you were looking at a group of pedigrees on reining horses and came across Step It Up Jak’s most would really spend some time looking his over. A son of the one and only Wimpys Little Step – $7 Million dollar sire, out of the great mare Docs Twinkie Jac PE $90k and full sister to Ms Holywood Showtime, the dam of NRHA’s leading lady Miss Tinseltown. If you then compared the photo of Step It Up Jak to his pedigree, you would be as impressed with what you saw. Deep bodied, strong hipped, big kind eye, clean throat latch, and a lot of bone. If you have the chance to meet him it’s hard not to fall in love with his gentle and quiet nature. If you didn’t know he was a stallion you never would. He has the pedigree, the mind, and the conformation that’s easy to see.
Maternal breeding in reining is so important. If you are looking for a stallion with a stellar bottom side Step It Up Jak most certainly has it. Reining legend Larry Rose says “Docs Twinkie Jac was pretty much the same as her full sister Ms Holywood Showtime – she was a kind and quiet mare, typical of the Hollywood Jacs. A little light bodied, but waspy and balanced. The type you breed to stout stud and get an athlete with brains”. Docs Twinkie Jac was by Docs Showtime and out of Ms Hollywood Peach (PE $17k) by Hollywood Jac 86. Docs Twinkie Jac won $7,669 NRHA, and now has produced over $90,000 including two full siblings to Step It Up Jak – Wimpys All Jacked Up – LTE $80,000+, and Wimpys Wound Up who is in Europe and won over $7,300, as well as being a full brother in blood WLS Tinseltown the 2016 NRBC Open Challenge Champion and earner of over $95,000. The family of winners and producers continues in this strong maternal family. Wimpys All Jacked Up is not only a dynamic show mare herself, but now a producer in Xtra Jacked Voodoo who was the second high seller at the 2015 NRHA Prospect Sale for six figures. He is now a money earner himself in his first few outs in the show pen.
Genetics and breeding tell a lot of truths. Docs Twinkie Jac is a full sister to Ms Hollywood Showtime as we mentioned above – Producer of over $350,000 including the great Miss Tinseltown. Ms Hollywood Showtime earned $808 NRHA, and in 2015 was still the #28 leading reining producer of all time. This great mare had several full siblings in blood to Step It Up Jak including: WLS Tinseltown LTE $95k – who most recently won the 2016 NRBC Open 7&Up Challenge, Wimpys Showboat LTE $39k, and Wimps Tinseltown an NRHA money earner. Prepotent genetics is proven over and over throughout generations. This family has proven that and then some.
Step It Up Jak was started by Roy van der Hoeven, then moved to Shawn Flarida’s barn. He had a ton of stop, and really trainable mind. The kind of mind that had a lot of patience and tolerance. He sold to Kim Ferguson-Donnelly of Sliding K Performance Horses where he won a majority of his earnings $4,400 in total, and then was sold to a non pro home. He was honest and consistent in the pen every time you showed him no matter who the rider was. Step It Up Jak suffered a collateral ligament injury to his left front foot that ultimately ended his show career much earlier than expected. This however, didn’t stop Melissa Mendoza of Tonkawa Hill Performance Horses from seeing the once in a lifetime prepotent genetics this horse could bring to her program when he came up for sale. She bought him, and has loved him ever since.
Step It Up Jak’s oldest very limited foal crop are now 4 year olds. They all have the “Jak” kind disposition and willingness to please. They have strong hips, deep heart girths, great bone like their sire, and of course his big kind eye. Melissa had her first full crop by Jak this year out of daughters to Reys Dual Badger, Tucker Cash, ColonelFourFreckle, two daughters of Topsail Cody as well as other great mares. Every single foal that hit the ground was as exceptional as the next. Her favorite cross so far is the Topsail Cody cross, they are athletic and remind her so much of Jak with that quick Topsail Cody turn of foot. Great Pine mares should really make a great cross on Step It Up Jak for similar pedigrees to great horses like Wimpys Tinseltown. His kind and quiet nature would be the perfect balance for the mare with more “sting”, that a mare owner may be looking to cool off without losing the natural ability to be a great reiner.
Step It Up Jak has found his home at Tonkawa Hill Performance Horses who is dedicated to making him a sire by crossing him on the strong broodmares in their own program and offering him to the public. With a pedigree made of true reining royalty full of producers that have created the sport, he has all the potential to be a serious contender as a sire in the reining industry. Melissa understands that it takes the faith in this horse and his foals in her own program, as well as the commitment from mare owners in the reining industry to make a stallion a sire and is eager to get his foals in the hands of NRHA professionals. Step It up Jak is 5 panel negative and stands at home on their ranch in Lincoln, Texas.
We would like to extend our appreciation to Melissa for allowing us to aid in the marketing plan for Step It Up Jak and letting us bring him on as a Platinum WhoaZone Stallion. We are so excited to see Jak foals in the show pen in the very near future.
