WHY: Many Breeders and NRHA Members do not agree with the recently implemented Hamilton Futurity and Derby Plan. Many feel it is too expensive, too complicated, results in added administrative payroll expenses and burden and will not solve the Derby problems.  Neither does it address divisions of the Futurity other than Open, which are also in need of change to make the entire futurity more equitable for all participants.

The author and members listed above propose the following changes to the NRHA Futurity and Derby Nominations.  This proposal is, of course, subject to review and modification.

NOTE: 'The Hamilton Plan' for major Futurity and Derby changes was unanimously Board-approved at the August 2007 Board Meeting.  click here for details

***amendments are in  yellow

We the following Breeders and NRHA Members do not agree with the Hamilton Futurity and Derby Plan. It is too expensive, too complicated, results in added payroll for administration and would not solve the Derby problems, nor does it address the other divisions of the Futurity that are also in need of change to make the Futurity more equitable for all the participants.

We support the following changes subject to review and modification.

  1. License fees:     $30 all ages

  1. Nomination fees:      Weanling year           $ 300.

                                                 Yearlings                 $1500.

                                                  2 Year olds             $3000.

                                               3/4/5/6 Year olds   $5000.

                                                             NO SUBSTITUTIONS

3.  Division Designation for Futurity:   August 1, of Three year old year.

Foals of 2006 Total License fees and Nomination $330 Due by July 1,2008

Foals of 2007 Total fees and Nomination $330 Due by December 15,2008

Foals of 2008 Total fees and Nomination $330 Due by July 1, 2009

Foals of 2009 Total fees and Nomination $330 Due by December 15, 2009

Based on this schedule of nominations the Futurity Payouts will increase in 2009 and the Derby Payouts would increase in 2010.

Distribution of funds: Payback

Nominator of Foal 5% Based On Futurity Placing  and 5% Based on Derby Placings of All Nomination Fees Collected or Prize Money paid to Finalists in all divisions.

Total 10%

Futurity                        40% Payable to all divisions

Derby:                           50% Payable to all divisions

Derby Funds Distributed as follows:

First  year           16.66%

Second year       16.66%    Plus cumulative year and interest income

Third year           16.66%    Plus cumulative years and interest income

Total Futurity Entry fees remain the same ($2000.) payable during 3 year old year. Jan.1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.  Amounts for each payment to be determined. NO SUBSTITUTIONS

Derby Entry fees remain the same payable Jan. 1, March 1, April 1.Amount for each payment to be determined.  Amounts for each payment to be determined.  NO SUBSTITUTIONS.

All Sire and Dam Breedings to be sold at NRHA auction. All start at 60% of advertised fee. Any unsold breedings after auction will be re-auctioned after futurity via Internet starting Jan 1 starting at reduced percentage to be determined with minimum fee.  We also suggest that the current Sire and Dam Program “SIRE AWARDS” be distributed to more places to benefit more owners for their stallion donation. Number of places to be determined by Sire and Dam committee and approved by board. All other conditions remain the same.

20% of Sire and Dam Breeding income goes to Total Futurity Purse

10 % of Sire and Dam Breeding income goes to Total Derby Purse for three years. (Total of 30% each year).

Based on other incentive programs and NRHA estimates this program should achieve the following income.

Nomination Fees Estimated 2800 weanlings @ $300.                            840,000

Sire and Dam contribution for Futurity and Derby                             108,000

Derby fund accrued interest years 2 and 3                                           77,000

Minimum extra funds including Derby fund accrued interest

To be distributed, excluding any extra income from foal

       Nominations after weanling year                                                          $1,025,000

Paybacks Distributed as follows:

Nominator of Foal         $102,500 (Based on Futurity Placing)

       Futurity (40%)              $450,000

       Derby Year One             $170,765

Derby Year Two           $170,765 Plus $170,765 accrued from year one

Total Derby Year Two added funds $341,530

Derby Year Three         $170,765 Plus $170,765 accrued from year one

Plus $170,765 accrued from year two

Total Derby Year Three added funds $512,295

BY YEAR THREE - DERBY WILL BE FULLY VESTED AND ADDED MONEY WILL BE $512,295 EACH YEAR.

(Based on Bob Hamilton’s estimates these funds should be considerable higher.) This is conservative estimate based on other numbers from another incentive program that has been very successful and the Futurity attracts many more owners.

We estimate that this program will also generate 20% additional entries in the Futurity and Derby, resulting in another $200,000 income and Prize money for the Futurity and an additional $75,000 in Derby income, because the purses will pay better for all entered, not just the top riders. THIS SHOULD BRING THE ADDITIONAL PRIZE MONEY FOR THESE TWO EVENTS UP

 $1,300,000 FROM THE CURRENT LEVELS

Late nominations are also less, so as not to discourage anyone from entering.

BY AWARDING THE FOAL NOMINATOR BASED ON FUTURITY AND DERBY PLACINGS, THEY WILL HAVE THE CHANCE OF RECOUPING THEIR NOMINATION FEES AND POSSIBLE WINNING SOME EXTRA MONEY DURING THE HORSES SHOW CAREER.

This program will generate excellent funding, and should please all breeders, foal nominators and exhibitors, and make it more equitable for all NRHA members while reducing Derby losses for the NRHA.

These funds can only be allocated and used for Futurity and Derby Paybacks

We would like to offer our committee to meet with you from your group on agreed lines of item that we support. We are asking to meet at next schedule board meeting.

We also have many ideas to obtain additional funding from other sources including ticket sales, better use of our TV programming to attract different type of sponsors, opening up the shopping at the futurity to attract more vendors and guests. We also have ideas to generate income at our convention instead of losses.

Thank you,

Dedicated Members and Breeders for a Better Futurity and Derby Committee

Steve Simon, Chair Person
